Castel Irgenhausen

The castle, dating from the third / fourth century, is the largest Roman fortress in Switzerland and is situated on Lake Pfäffikersee in Irgenhausen. The Roman fort Irgenhausen was built in 294/295 AD. It served to secure the Roman road from Kempraten to Winterthur. The head picture above shows the view from the fort to Lake Pfäffikon and the mountains behind it.

The ruins of the castle are the best preserved in Eastern Switzerland and are without question worth a visit! Not least for this reason it is a popular destination for excursions and school trips. The fort is situated on the way around the lake – only a few metres from the pool at the lake and about 15 minutes on foot from our house.
